A NIGHT FULL OF SURPRISES

Warner Todd Huston, Andrea Shea King, Ed Morrissey

Tonight's Awards Banquet capped off three days of intellectual stimulation and making new acquaintances. For me, it was like coming home to a political party that shares my views on our government and our country.

As I pack and get ready to return to Florida on a waaay-too-early morning flight, I leave you with these photos taken at the dinner.

Conference organizer Chuck Muth presents the Blogger of the Year Award to the blogger of the year!

Ed Morrissey, who I've mentioned many times in these posts about the conference was honored tonight with the CLC Conservative Blogger of the Year award for his prolific and popular conservative writings on Captain's Quarters Blog. Congratulations Ed!

Ed tells how he helped save Canada!

The evening's climax came when Rep. John Shadegg introduced the Goldwater Award, named for the late Arizona Senator Barry Goldwater, considered to be the father of the modern conservative movement. In fact, the first quote I put on my website at ASKShow.com was the same Goldwater quote Shadegg recited.

Shadegg suggests what Conservatives can to do with the Be-tray-us ad

The Goldwater award is given to an elected official who embraces Sen. Goldwater's passion for the Constitution, individual liberty, federalism and strictly limited government philosophy. A gift of $1,000 is donated to the Goldwater Institute's Ronald Reagan Fellows Program in the recipient's name.

Tonight, the award was given to South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford, who previously served six years in the House of Representatives. Gov. Sanford was elected as South Carolina's 115th governor in 2002 and re-elected in 2006.

Sanford delivered a captivating "State of the Conservative Union Address". The soft spoken Beaufort, South Carolina native said we are living at the most pivotal point in time in our nation's history.

"We're at a decision point. We're in a war of ideas. And like the soldiers who jumped from the Higgins boats onto Omaha Beach on D-Day, we must move forward with courage. They didn't falter, and neither can we. Courage, even in the face of failure, reminds me of a Churchill quote -- Courage is going into failure after failure after failure, without losing enthusiasm."

He quoted another favorite from Alexander Tytler, the Lord Woodhousely, explaining that Hurricane Katrina's aftermath was a wake up call to where we are as a nation -- dependency.

We were deeply impressed with the Governor of South Carolina, and expect we'll be hearing a lot more about him in the future.

Oh, and the Presidential Straw Poll? Winner was Ron Paul....

Mark Sanford is going to be Ron Paul's VP! Believe it! I would vote for that ticket in a heart beat... and I am 25 years old... exlain that! I can help you... Mr. Sanford is right when he says we are at a pivotal point in our Nation's history... that point is not being lost on the Internet... the political/economic pulse of our country is determined on the internet and Dr. Paul is king. Paul's 'freedom message' has encouraged me to read Goldwater, Mises, Bastiat, the Constitution! I have taken it upon myself to organize his campaign in my area of the country. I have developed a relationship with the local head of the GOP who herself was a Goldwater Girl. The message of individual liberty is ALIVE and WELL! The internet has incubated these principles and allowed my generation a portal to the message! This is fight I am willing to engage in for the rest of my life. In fact, there is no greater objective I have than to see that Individualism is championed over collectivism in my time here on Earth!
