Janos Starker dies, Janos Starker, who was regarded as one of the world's greatest cellists, has died at the age of 88.
Born in Budapest, Starker moved to the US after World War II and had spells with the Dallas Symphony, Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and Chicago Symphony.

After becoming a full-time concert soloist and teacher, he performed with leading orchestras around the world and made more than 165 recordings.

His rendition of Bach's Suites For Solo Cello 1-6 won a Grammy Award in 1997.
He had taught at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music since 1958 and university president Michael A McRobbie described him as "one of the greatest cellists to have ever lived".

"Few performers achieve the kind of technical mastery, innovation and scintillating stage presence that defined Professor Starker, who will always be loved and admired for his willingness to share his tremendous talent and remarkable personal story with generations of aspiring musicians," he said.
