Browns draft pick arrested, Browns draft pick Armonty Bryant was charged Monday with driving under the influence of alcohol, the latest legal trouble for the defensive end.
Bryant was arrested Friday in Ada, Okla., according to a police report obtained by The Associated Press. He was charged in Pontotoc County District Court and a court appearance was scheduled for Tuesday.
According to an arrest affidavit, Bryant was stopped early Friday near the stadium at East Central University, where he was a standout player for the Division II school. His blood-alcohol level was 0.098 percent; the legal limit in Oklahoma is 0.08.
The Browns drafted Bryant last month despite his arrest last year on a felony charge of marijuana distribution in a school zone. He pleaded no contest. After Cleveland selected him with the 217th overall pick, first-year coach Rob Chudzinski said the Browns believed he is ''past the mistakes that he has made and ready to move on. He has matured.''
Following Bryant's DUI arrest, the team said in a statement it is aware of what happened and is ''collecting more information.''
Bryant is scheduled to take part in rookie minicamp beginning Friday in Berea.
According to the police report, Bryant was pulled over because he made a left turn after failing to signal until his vehicle had come to a stop at a stop sign on campus. Bryant initially told the arresting officer he was driving a friend home from a party and had not been drinking. He later said he ''had a few drinks earlier in the evening,'' the report added.
The report said the officer tried to administer a breath test more than 10 times before Bryant completed it successfully. The officer also arrested a passenger in Bryant's car. Bryant posted $500 bail and was released later in the day.
Last month, the Browns used the first of their two seventh-round picks on Bryant. He was suspended three games last season after he was arrested. He was twice accused of selling marijuana to an undercover officer, both times in a campus parking lot.
During a conference call after he was drafted, Bryant said he had learned from his mistake and thanked the Browns for believing in him.
''I feel like it was just a stupid move on my part. I should have been more mature about the situation and be more focused on football, which is something I really want to do with my life. Now that I've gotten that second chance, I feel like I won't let anyone down.''
