Simi teacher arrested, A standout teacher at a Simi Valley elementary school has been accused of molesting a young boy at the school where she taught.
Malia Brooks, 32, has since resigned from her post as a sixth grade teacher at Garden Grove Impact Academy, according to The Daily News. Now she's facing five counts of molestation with a child under 14. Today she was arraigned in Ventura County Superior Court, and she pleaded not guilty to the charges. She was held in lieu of $2 million bail.
The alleged acts happened January 15, February 14 and 16, and district officials received a complaint shortly after. Brooks was put on administrative leave on February 21 while police investigated. The investigation led to her arrest. Parents were sent a letter about the incident after she went on leave.
Brooks' arrest shocked the community. Brooks was a standout teacher who was rated "exemplary" on her last four performance reviews. She was married and had two children, according to KTLA. But Simi Valley police said that she abused her position of authority. Detective Sgt. Randy Foushee told The Daily News, "She was an adult figure in a position of authority which she used to build and groom a relationship with this victim."
Brooks is accused of committing a lewd act upon a child, oral copulation and three counts of genital penetration by a foreign object. Detectives in the case said they believe that there was only one alleged victim after interviewing several children on campus. However, they are asking for anyone who knows anything about the case to come forward.
