George Zimmerman was denied a trial delay this week. Zimmerman's lawyers were denied a request to delay the trial on the murder of Trayvon Martin and it will now go ahead as scheduled. According to a report from Tuesday evening (Feb. 5), prosecutor Bernie de la Rionda stated that the trial is set to begin in June.
Almost a year ago, Martin was shot and killed while walking home. Zimmerman allegedly shot him in a confrontation, but has claimed that his actions were in self-defense. Zimmerman claims that the shooting took place during a fight and that up to that point Martin had been acting suspicious. Now a jury will have to decide which story to believe from that fateful night.
The point of this hearing was for Zimmerman's lawyers to argue that they needed more time to prepare for the case. It lasted about an hour before the judge came down with his ruling. He ruled that the trial should not be delayed and that Zimmerman's lawyers had already been given an adequate amount of time to prepare for the trial.
Now that Zimmerman has been denied a delay, the prosecution can begin putting the rest of their case against him together.
