Alan O'Day dies, The music industry is crying on its collective pillow as "Undercover Angel" singer Alan O'Day died on Friday following a battle with cancer, according to his record label. He was 72.

The singer/songwriter wrote popular songs for the likes of the Righteous Brothers, Dusty Springfield, Three Dog Night, Paul Anka, and Helen Reddy before landing his own hit in 1977 with "Undercover Angel."


 "Alan continued to write and perform until his last days," according to a statement from his record label, 1st Phase Records. "Alan was a generous man who gave his heart and soul to the music industry."

O'Day first gained notoriety in the early 1970s when he wrote Cher's "Train of Thought," and followed it with more hits including Reddy's "Angie Baby" and the Righteous Brothers's "Rock and Roll Heaven." He spent the 1980s working with Janis Liebhart on songs for "Muppet Babies" cartoons and the '90s working on the music for National Geographic's series, "Really Wild Animals."

"'If there's a Rock n Roll Heven well U know they got one hell of a band,'" Diane Warren wrote on Twitter. "My friend Alan O'Days song. The band just got better my friend. RIP."

The star died in his home in Westwood, Calif., with his family and friends by his side, according to The Hollywood Reporter. He is survived by his wife, Yuka.
