Taliban attack NGO, Two explosions followed by gunfire erupted in central Kabul today and police said casualties were feared, the second major strike in the city in just over a week.
One of the blasts was near the hospital of Afghanistan’s National Directorate of Security intelligence agency, police spokesman Hashmatullah Stanekzai said by phone. Insurgents armed with heavy and light weapons were exchanging fire with Afghan forces, he said. The Taliban claimed the attack in an e-mailed statement from its spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahed.
A suicide car bomber May 16 killed 14 people, including eight Afghan civilians, four NATO contractors and two coalition troops in an attack that targeted a military convoy as it drove through Kabul. Hizb-e-Islami, a guerrilla group led by a former Afghan prime minister, Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, and allied to the Taliban, took responsibility.
Four days later, at least 13 people, including the chief of a northern provincial council, died as a suicide bomber on foot detonated his vest as the official entered his office.
Hostilities by the Taliban and other insurgents escalated in the first three months of the year as the spring fighting season began. Attacks increased 47 percent in the first quarter of the year, the Afghanistan NGO Safety Office, an organization that provides advice to aid agencies, said in a report.
In his statement, the Taliban’s Mujahed said a car bomber had targeted the gate of a CIA building in Kabul, enabling gunmen to enter. The claims could not be verified. The Taliban routinely exaggerate the success of their attacks.
