Grenade found, Family and neighbors of a World War II veteran who died in June got a scare when a grenade was discovered in the man’s Brooklyn apartment, police and sources said.
Authorities arrived at the home of Lawrence Anthony Zambito, 95, to evacuate the building and check the weapon after getting a call from two of Zambito’s nieces about 5 p.m. Saturday.
The nieces had been cleaning out the vacant home on Jerome St. in East New York over the past few weeks and discovered the grenade in the process, sources said.
The spooked relatives called 911, fearing the weapon could be dangerous.
“They came across it. They got scared and they called the cops," said building super Anthony Mendez, 31.
Police found the grenade was inactive and allowed residents to return to the building.
